The Wyoming Science Olympiad (WYSO), hosted by Casper College, is the state's official Science Olympiad program for middle and high school students (Division B for grades 6-9 and Division C for grades 9-12). It is an in-person, team-based competition that emphasizes hands-on science challenges and collaboration to promote STEM skills, increase student interest in science, and enhance science education in Wyoming schools. WYSO is affiliated with the National Science Olympiad.
Preparation: Several months of study, practice, and building activities. Competition day: Typically one full day (approximately 6-8 hours).
Winners are determined based on event-specific rubrics and scoring criteria, which vary by event. Events cover life, physical, earth, space sciences, and engineering challenges. Teams earn points in each event, and overall team scores are aggregated to determine placement. The competition is a single-day tournament without multiple rounds. Judges evaluate written, oral, and practical components depending on the event. Emphasis is placed on teamwork, accuracy, creativity, and adherence to event rules.
