An international video contest for grades 6-12 hosted by Population Connection, challenging students to create 1-minute videos on population-related issues in Energy, Wetlands, or Economics. Participation is free, fully online, and offers cash prizes for winners across multiple levels.
The World of 8 Billion Student Video Contest, organized by Population Connection, is an international competition open to grades 6-12 students worldwide. It challenges participants to create original, 60-second videos addressing global population-related issues in Energy, Wetlands, or Economics, proposing sustainable solutions while connecting them to human population growth. The contest fosters critical thinking, research, media literacy, creativity, and awareness of global sustainability challenges, with various awards given at state, regional, and global levels.
Preparation typically involves several weeks for research, planning, and video production. The submission process is online and can be completed in a few hours. Contest duration spans the submission window (about six months).
Judging is based on a rubric that includes compliance with contest guidelines (time limit, language/subtitles, no copyrighted materials, accuracy of information), and four scored categories weighted equally: how well the video explains the impact of population growth on the chosen topic (20%), topic knowledge (20%), quality and detail of the sustainable solution (20%), and uniqueness/creativity/originality of the video (20%). Videos are judged individually, with prizes awarded by topic and educational level (middle school and high school), as well as state, regional, and global recognition.
