USAMTS is a free, online, multi-round math competition for U.S. middle and high schoolers involving proof-based problems solved over about a month per round. Participants receive written feedback, and top scorers earn prizes and may qualify for further contests like AIME.
The USA Mathematical Talent Search (USAMTS) is a free, national proof-based mathematics competition organized by the Art of Problem Solving Initiative (AoPSI) for middle and high school students in the United States. It encourages deep problem-solving and proof-writing skills by allowing students several weeks per round to carefully craft solutions, providing personalized feedback from volunteer graders, and awarding prizes to high-performing students. USAMTS also serves as a pathway to prestigious competitions such as the AIME.
Each round lasts about one month, with flexible preparation and solution writing time. The entire contest spans several months across three rounds. No strict time limits during problem solving.
Each of the three rounds includes five problems scored from 0 to 5 points each, for a maximum of 75 points total. Problems are evaluated on correctness, clarity, completeness, and rigor of proofs. Graders, including educators, former contestants, and volunteers, provide detailed comments to help participants improve. Awards are given to roughly the top 45% of scorers, divided into tiers of Honorable Mention, Bronze, Silver, and Gold. High scorers also gain eligibility to take the AIME, leading toward qualification for the US IMO team.
