TEAMS is a national STEM competition by TSA where middle and high school teams solve engineering challenges using math and science, competing in design/build projects, multiple-choice exams, essays, and mathematical modeling.
The TSA TEAMS (Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics, and Science) Competition is an annual STEM event organized by the Technology Student Association (TSA) for middle and high school teams of 2 to 4 students. Participants apply their math, science, and engineering knowledge to solve real-world engineering challenges through a four-part competition including design/build projects, multiple-choice exams, essays, and mathematical modeling. This competition develops teamwork, creativity, and STEM skills while providing regional, state, and national level opportunities.
Preparation typically takes several weeks including studying STEM concepts, practicing teamwork for the Design/Build challenge, and researching for the essay. The in-person competition day usually lasts 4-6 hours to complete all four components.
Teams are scored on four components: the Design/Build challenge, Multiple Choice exam, Essay, and Mathematical Modeling. Scoring includes evaluating the creativity, effectiveness, and feasibility of engineering solutions; accuracy and problem-solving skills in multiple-choice questions; clarity, research depth, and persuasiveness of the essay; and the quality and accuracy of the mathematical modeling. Team scores at state level determine state awards and national qualification. The highest scoring teams at state level advance to the National TEAMS Competition where winners are selected based on a similar four-part evaluation.
