The Alamo Regional Science and Engineering Fair (ARSEF) is an annual STEM competition organized by the Alamo Regional Academy of Science and Engineering (ARASE) based in San Antonio, Texas. It engages over 700 middle and high school students from 32 counties in Texas who present original scientific research in fourteen categories. The fair fosters scientific inquiry, networking with STEM professionals, supports underrepresented groups, and serves as a qualifier for prestigious state and national competitions, including the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF).
Preparation for a research project typically takes several months leading up to the competition. The fair event itself spans two days, involving setup, presentation, judging, and awards.
Projects are judged on scientific creativity, quality of research, presentation skills, analytical depth, and adherence to ethical research standards. Judging occurs through rounds involving fair judges from the scientific and educational communities. Senior and junior division winners receive recognition, and top projects qualify for advancement to state and national fairs. Special awards are also presented based on project category and excellence.
