The South Asian Spelling Bee is an annual national spelling competition in the United States for children of South Asian descent aged 5 to 14, organized by Touchdown Media and supported by the South Asian Engagement Foundation. It aims to promote academic excellence, language proficiency, and critical thinking through multiple stages including written primaries, virtual regional oral rounds, and a national final, with scholarship prizes awarded to top spellers.
Preparation typically lasts several weeks to months, supported by provided study word lists and online resources. Competition days include approximately 3-6 hours for written and oral rounds on regional contest dates and additional hours for the National Finals event.
Spellers must correctly spell words in both written and oral rounds. The preliminary stage requires a minimum of 18 out of 25 words spelled correctly to move to the oral round. In the oral round, participants spell words aloud on a miss-and-out basis, with elimination upon misspelling. Judges use the Merriam Webster Unabridged Dictionary Online for word pronunciations and disputes. Top two spellers from each regional advance to national finals. Judges reserve the right to conduct tie-breakers or declare joint winners. Final decisions rest with the judges.
