The NSO is a global science competition conducted by SOF for students of classes 1-12, held in two rounds at schools. It assesses scientific knowledge and reasoning abilities through a multiple-choice format, fostering academic excellence in science.
The National Science Olympiad (NSO) is an annual academic competition organized by the Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF), a registered not-for-profit organization. It aims to assess and enhance students' scientific knowledge, reasoning, and logical ability through two exam rounds conducted globally for students from classes 1 to 12. NSO fosters problem-solving and critical thinking skills, nurturing scientific talent and preparing students for higher-level competitive exams.
Preparation: Several weeks to months leading to the exam. Competition day: 1 hour per exam level, with two levels overall.
Winners are determined based on scores achieved on objective, multiple-choice question exams conducted in two levels. Level 1 is open to students from classes 1 to 12, and Level 2 is for qualifying students from classes 3 to 12 who rank among the top 5% in their class in Level 1, as well as top 25 rank holders per zone and class toppers under certain conditions. Weightage is given to scores across three sections: Logical Reasoning, Science, and an Achievers Section, each with different marks and question counts, varying by class. Final winners receive awards based on their overall performance at international, zonal, and school levels.
