Organized by Mustang Math, a nonprofit of high school and college volunteers, the tournament offers engaging, game-like rounds that encourage analytical skills and teamwork. It serves as a significant platform for middle schoolers to connect through challenging math problems in both in-person and online formats.
Preparation typically involves several weeks of practice and optional prep classes. The competition day lasts approximately 3-4 hours encompassing multiple 1-hour team rounds plus breaks and activities.
Winners are determined based on team performance across multiple core rounds, which include problem-solving and game-style challenges roughly 1 hour each. Teams accumulate points within events such as Herding Hexes, Mounting Mayhem, and Relay Rodeo along with a unique Mystery Mare round announced on tournament day. Team scores from individual and collaborative events are combined to rank teams. Awards are given to top teams by division based on overall cumulative scores.
