The International Online Debate Tournament is a global, fully online debate competition organized by Debate to Educate. Designed for middle and high school students, the tournament focuses on developing public speaking, critical thinking, and argumentation skills through structured debates. It offers novice and open categories, enabling participants worldwide to engage with diverse viewpoints in a competitive and educational format.
Preparation: Flexible; teams receive motions on debate days with 30 minutes prep per round. Competition spans multiple days with 3 total debate rounds per team.
Debates are judged based on argumentation, public speaking, and engagement with points of information (POIs). Novice speakers present for 3-5 minutes without required POI acceptance, while open speakers present for 5-7 minutes and must accept at least 2 POIs. Teams compete in 3 rounds, and performance in these rounds determines advancement and winners. Judges evaluate the quality of arguments, clarity, responsiveness, and teamwork.
