The Vermont High School Scholars' Bowl State Championship is Vermont’s official statewide academic quiz bowl tournament organized by Vermont-NEA Scholars' Bowl since 1983. It features high school teams competing in a fast-paced question-and-answer format covering broad academic knowledge. The competition is highly prestigious, crowning state champions in varsity and small-school divisions annually, with finals held in Montpelier.
Preparation spans the academic year with weekly practice and regional competitions from November to January. Playoffs and final rounds take place in January through March, with competition days lasting several hours.
Winners are determined through a point-based scoring system over multiple rounds. Matches consist of toss-up questions and related bonus questions. Teams accumulate points for correct answers, with advancement based on win-loss records and point totals in regional and playoff brackets. The season includes regional play, Swiss-paired playoff matches, and single-elimination finals. Teams with top records automatically advance to finals, others may compete in a second-chance Medlar Cup bracket. The finals culminate with a champion declared in varsity and small school divisions.
