Illinois MathCounts is an annual statewide math competition for middle school students in Illinois, organized by the Illinois Engineering Initiative and administered with support from the Engineering Society of Illinois. It aims to foster problem-solving and analytical thinking skills through in-person competitions at chapter, regional, and state levels. Top performers advance to the national MathCounts Championship, promoting interest in mathematics and engineering among young learners.
Preparation time varies but often involves several weeks of practice leading up to competitions. Each competition day typically lasts about 3-4 hours, covering multiple rounds of the contest.
Competitors progress through four competition rounds: Sprint (speed and accuracy without calculators), Target (problem-solving with calculator use), Team round (collaborative problem-solving), and Countdown round (speed and accuracy in an oral format). Scores from these rounds determine individual rankings and team placements. Top individuals from the state competition are selected for the national championship team based on written round scores, with tiebreakers applied if necessary.
