An annual in-person math competition hosted by Georgia Tech for high school students, featuring individual and team rounds focused on advanced problem-solving and teamwork, attracting 300-400 participants from multiple states.
The Georgia Tech High School Math Competition, also known as High School Math Day, is a prestigious annual math event organized by the School of Mathematics at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Established in 1958 and revitalized in 2004, it brings together hundreds of high school students from across Georgia and beyond to compete in individual and team rounds. The competition covers a wide range of math topics such as algebra, geometry, combinatorics, number theory, and calculus, fostering advanced problem-solving skills, teamwork, and engagement with mathematics through various interactive activities and talks.
Preparation typically ranges from weeks to months of practice with past problems. The competition day lasts approximately 6-8 hours, including exams, breaks, team activities, and talks.
Winners are determined primarily by performance across multiple rounds. In the morning, students take either the Competitive or Exploratory exam; the top 20% of Competitive exam takers qualify for the afternoon Olympiad-style Proof exam, which is graded for prizes. The Exploratory exam is for a broader range of math experience and does not advance to Proof. The Team round involves collaborative problem solving and is checked for completion but is not officially graded. Scoring emphasizes problem-solving ability, precision, and teamwork across these individual and team rounds.
