Chicago ARML is a prestigious competitive math league organized by the Chicago ARML Team. It brings together top high school students from the Chicago area for intense tryouts and rigorous team practices focused on advanced problem-solving, proof-writing, and teamwork. The team competes annually in the national American Regions Mathematics League (ARML) competition held at multiple U.S. sites, showcasing some of the nation's best young mathematicians.
Preparation involves several months of weekly or bi-weekly practice sessions leading up to the competition. The national ARML competition day lasts approximately 4-6 hours including all rounds.
Winners at the ARML national competition are determined based on combined scores from multiple rounds: a 20-minute team round (10 problems, each worth 5 points), a one-hour Power Question round requiring proofs and detailed explanations (worth 50 points), an individual round where each team member solves pairs of problems (worth a total of 150 points for the team), and a relay round involving groups of three students solving sequential problems with time-based scoring (up to 50 points). Teams are scored cumulatively across rounds to determine rankings.
