CSIMC offers math contests annually in November for Canadian students in grades 9-12 and CÉGEP, featuring nine problems that develop problem-solving skills and identify top mathematical talents for advanced competitions.
The Canadian Senior and Intermediate Mathematics Contests (CSIMC) are annual national mathematics competitions organized by the University of Waterloo's Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing (CEMC). They target Canadian students in grades 9-12 and CÉGEP, providing challenging problems aimed at developing problem-solving skills and identifying talented mathematical thinkers for advanced contests such as the Canadian Mathematical Olympiad. The contest features nine problems, including both answer-only and full-solution questions, emphasizing not only correctness but also clarity and presentation.
Preparation typically involves several weeks to months of problem-solving practice. The contest duration is approximately 2 hours on a single day.
Scoring is based on a total of 60 marks for the nine problems, with six answer-only questions and three full-solution questions. Full-solution problems are assessed on completeness, clarity, and the quality of presentation in addition to correctness. Partial credit is awarded accordingly, and poorly presented correct solutions may receive fewer points. Winners are determined by total scores. High scorers may be invited to more advanced competitions and training programs, including the Canadian Mathematical Olympiad.
