The BioGENEius Challenges, run by the Biotechnology Institute, offer high school students a competitive platform to present original research in biotechnology across healthcare, sustainability, and environment sectors, progressing through local, state, national, and international levels.
The BioGENEius Challenges, organized by the Biotechnology Institute, is a prestigious international biotechnology research competition for high school students (grades 9-12). It promotes original student research projects in healthcare, sustainability, and environmental fields of biotechnology. Participants present their work at local, state, national, and international levels, gaining mentorship and exposure to industry professionals, with the top finalists competing at the BIO International Convention.
Preparation involves several months of research and project development, typically spanning a school semester or more. Competition events, including presentations and judging, generally occur over 1-3 days depending on the level.
Projects are evaluated by panels of industry professionals and academic experts based on originality, scientific merit, impact, and relevance to biotechnology. Judging focuses on the intended outcomes or potential impact of the project rather than just the process or methods. Scoring considers the significance of the scientific contribution to healthcare, sustainability, or environment. Students present their research during live judging sessions and poster presentations where clarity, scientific rigor, and presentation skills are assessed. Top scoring students in local/state rounds advance to national and then international finals. Judges provide specific tailored feedback to competitors to promote learning and development.
