Annual essay contests by the Ayn Rand Institute invite students worldwide to write on Rand's novels, with scholarships up to $25,000. Open to middle school, high school, college, and graduate students depending on the contest.
The Ayn Rand Essay Contests are annual virtual writing competitions hosted by the Ayn Rand Institute (ARI) that encourage students globally to engage critically with Ayn Rand's novels Anthem, The Fountainhead, and Atlas Shrugged. Since 1986, these contests have promoted deep understanding of Rand's themes of individualism, freedom, and human potential, awarding scholarships up to $25,000 to foster advanced writing skills and intellectual growth.
Preparation: Several weeks to read the novel and draft the essay. Competition (submission deadline to results): several weeks to months. Essay length requires sustained effort to analyze and write thoughtfully.
Essays are judged by a panel selected by the Ayn Rand Institute based on clarity, originality, logical organization, and the ability to argue and justify viewpoints. Judges look for outstanding grasp of the philosophical themes of the novel, quality of writing including structure and reasoning, and adherence to the essay prompt. Spelling errors and corrections can negatively affect scoring. Winning essays must demonstrate clear, articulate, and insightful engagement with Rand's ideas, not necessarily agreement with them.
