ASME Student Design Challenge is an annual, global competition where undergraduate ASME members design and build prototypes to solve an annually defined engineering challenge, fostering innovation and practical skills.
The ASME Student Design Challenge (SDC) is an annual international engineering competition organized by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) that invites undergraduate engineering students worldwide who are ASME members to design, fabricate, and operate prototypes that solve a specific, real-world engineering problem defined annually. It promotes innovation, hands-on learning, and practical engineering skills, offering a prestigious platform for students to demonstrate creativity and problem-solving in engineering.
Preparation typically spans several months involving design, fabrication, and testing. The in-person competition event usually occurs over a weekend with prototype demonstrations and judging.
Judging is based on creativity, design innovation, functionality, performance, and adherence to competition rules. Teams submit videos demonstrating prototype compliance and design validation, which are scored and contribute to the final score. Judges also evaluate prototype operation during in-person events. Bonus points are awarded for design validation videos, and final scores combine video and live performance assessments to determine winners.
