Participation Information
Students write an essay on a selected topic related to American history, which changes annually. Essays are submitted through local DAR chapters, and winning essays progress through chapter, state, and national levels.
Open to students in grades 5-8 in public, private, parochial schools, and registered home-study programs.

Students obtain the essay prompt from their local DAR chapter, research, and write the essay, then submit it to the local DAR chapter for judging.
Research materials on American history, writing supplies, and access to local DAR chapter submission guidelines.
Judging is based on historical accuracy, adherence to the topic, organization, interest, originality, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and neatness.
