Each participant writes a 500-word essay on a specified topic. At the local school level there must be at least twelve participants. Essays are judged on creativity, grammar, punctuation, organization, vocabulary, subject-matter content, and overall effectiveness of the essay. The Modern Woodmen provide brochures for students, awards and ribbons for winners and participants, and necessary materials and forms.
