About the competition

Voice of Democracy is a patriotic audio-essay competition for high school students that encourages them to explore democratic and patriotic themes. Each year, over $1 million in scholarships are awarded.

Participation Information

Students submit a 3-5 minute recorded audio essay on a given theme. Local, state, and national competitions follow, with the top national winner receiving a $35,000 scholarship.
Open to high school students in grades 9-12 in the U.S.

1. Register through the local VFW Post. 2. Submit a recorded audio essay based on the annual theme. 3. Top winners from each state advance to the national level for a chance to win scholarships.
